Shadows of Evil

Healing took much longer than Li Shao would have liked. Weeks passed where he could do nothing but bathe, eat, and sleep. Song Meng helped him as much as he could in between training and his other duties as a new disciple of the Zephyr Temple. The times he needed something when Song Meng wasn’t around, the twins graciously agreed to help. It led to daily walks around the perimeter of the temple together, the two girls holding on to either of his arms to steady him. They’ve grown closer, and, as a result, the air around them was friendly and comfortable.

“You’re doing much better these days,” Disciple Chenguang commented from his left.

“I agree. Having come so close to death would put a lesser man out for months and you’ve managed to heal in less than one!”

His cheeks tinged pink at the praise. “That’s so nice of you to say, really, but I’ve only healed so well thanks to your amiable attention.”

Disciple Chenguang giggled, hiding her smile behind the folds of her robe. “You’re such a smooth talker!”

Li Shao chuckled. He didn’t agree, but he’d allow the ladies to think whatever they’d like. Disciple Xiurong rubbed her hand up and down his forearm, smiling softly at the disciples they passed on the way to the main courtyard. Neither of the girls noticed the scathing looks shot his way after they were out of sight, but Li Shao did. Clearly, there were many men here who envied his current position. Not to mention their suspicious older brother. When prodded, Li Shao had to reassure the temple heir that romance was not his intention, even if it was theirs.

The courtyard opened up, revealing the now spindly willow, all the leaves gone in preparation for the first snow. A brisk wind ripped through the space, forcing a shiver as Li Shao stepped forward. Song Meng sat beneath the tree with his legs folded in a lotus position and an ethereal expression on his face. Grandmaster Shun ordered him to meditate every day for three hours in an attempt to teach the poor man discipline, a concept The Great Immortal Hero had always struggled with.

While power came easily to him, control of it didn’t. Or rather, the proper control of it. Cultivators were meant to be stoic and humble. Song Meng was neither of those things and, much to the Grandmaster’s dismay, Li Shao knew he never would be. But that was one of the most charming things about him.

Wait… Who are you calling charming? Huh?! Li Shao thought to himself, scowling and shoving the smirking Song Meng in his head aside.

Not only had he spent the last few weeks healing, he’d also focused on widening the distance between them yet again. Sleeping on his own bedroll no matter how cold it felt, walking to the bath alone despite how much pain it brought him, and keeping his hands to himself. It was easier said than done, but he’d managed it, and Song Meng didn’t mention the sudden change.
